Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
Matthew 14:22-33
Jesus walks on the water, Peter doesn't!
It is a story that jars our expectations. People don't walk on water, as Peter found out! People (and fish!) swim in water, people boat, canoe, kayak, water-ski, "personal watercraft" on or over or through the water. Birds, and some people, float on the water. But people don't walk on water - unless it's frozen! And yet here comes Jesus walking through the night, walking on the water.
How little we know about Jesus, how little we know about water, and in particular, Lake superior. The more time we spend in, on, and around the lake, the more surprising things it will show us. -cw
A prayer
God of daylight and darkness,
of calm seas and rough sailing, in all our walks of life your presence brings peace. Give us the grace to keep our eyes on Jesus, our minds "stayed on Jesus", our hearts open to your love. We pray with our hand in the hand of the one who calmed the sea. Amen. -cw
